After our EOY exams, teachers has been showing us movies. One of my favourite is Coach Carter. Its about a group of Americans who loves to play basketball. But they are bad students and did'nt win much basketball games. They are often looked down by others. Even their teachers. One day, Coach carter went to watch them play. After the game, Kenneth Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) is officially offered a part-time, low-paying ($1,500 for the whole basketball season) job coaching the basketball team at his old high school, an inner-city public school in Richmond, California for which he had previously played and set as of yet unbroken records. Although he discovers the players to be unruly and disrespectful, he accepts and starts to gain their respect, though they must gain his in returnHe got them to sign the contracts.
Here are the rules they must accept.
1. they must maintain a 2.3 grade point average
2. they must attend classes and sit in the front row
3. they must wear jackets and ties on game days
They were playing really well now. However, Carter found out that their academic requirements were not good. Carter locked up the gym and and makes the team spend practice time in the library, being tutored by some of their teachers. The boys were unhappy at first, but realised that they must fulfil the requirements in order to play. Eventually, the school board and the parents fight back against Carters actions. The board eventually votes 4–2 to end the lockout, the dissenting votes being the school's principal and the chairwoman of the board. Carter is on the verge of quitting, but when he arrives at the gym to pack up his things, he finds the players sitting at school desks in the gym, with their teachers tutoring them.
Jason Lyle : Sir, they can cut the chains off but they can't make us play.
Damien Carter : We've decided we're going to finish what you've started, sir
Worm : Yeah, so leave us be, coach. We've got shit to do, sir.
Cruz is finally able to answer Carter's question, "What is your deepest fear?"
Timo Cruz : *Quoted Originally by Marianne Williamson *
1. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
2. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
3. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
4. Your playing small does not serve the world.
5. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
6. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
7. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
8. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
Carter said : When we step on the floor every second that clock is ticking, we are pedal to the metal, we run the ball, we pressure the ball, and most importantly we control the tempo of the game, we make them play Richmond Oiler ball.
They finally drawed with St Francis, but at the last 3 seconds, Ty Crane, St Francis leading shooter, shot in a 3 point goal. The team is understandably disappointed by the loss. Carter was proud of them.
Coach Carter : l came to coach basketball players, and you became students.
Coach Carter : l came to teach boys, and you became men.
Six of the players went on to college (this was a school at which only about 50% of students graduated, and only 6% of those who graduate usually went to college)
Jason Lyle quoted something at the beginning of the show.
Jason Lyle: You said we're a team. One person struggles, we all struggle. One person triumphs, we all triumph.
This is an inspiring movie. I would say its a must watch movie!
